In the s-PAW-tlight
February is Pet Dental Health Month! Good Dental health is imperative to the overall health of your pet. Healthy teeth and gums can lead to a happier and longer life. To celebrate Pet Dental Health Month, the grooming salon is offering a special package designed with love in mind! “Puppy Love and Kitty Kisses†includes a Plaqclnz treatment aimed at helping remove the gunky buildup on your pet’s teeth for fresh, kissable breath; followed by a natural sugar-based body scrub that gets down deep to leave your pets’ skin silky smooth and petably soft. The package is topped off with a temporary Petattoo, a paint based stamp that gives your pet a little extra attitude or a special treat bag for later.
Our salon has been using the Plaqclnz system for over a year and the results are amazing! Plaqclnz is a zinc based oral treatment for cats and dogs. Unlike other pet oral health formulas, Plaqclnz contains zinc that has been proven effective for preventative pet dental care. University-based research shows that bad breath and gingivitis can be improved by using oral products containing zinc, a metal ion that is an essential mineral. Present in most foods, as well as added to others, zinc is important to maintaining overall health. Zinc based PlaqClnz inhibits odor formation, breaks down bacteria by dissolving its cell membranes and helps heal gum tissue. PlaqClnz also contains other natural ingredients and is safe for daily use. To learn more information about PlaqClnz please visit www.plaqclnz.com.
Not quite sure you’re ready to try Plaqclnz for your pet? Our salon also offers traditional teeth brushing. Regular brushing can also be combined with the Plaqclnz system for even better results!
Through the month of February, the “Puppy Love and Kitty Kisses†package is available to add onto any salon bath for just $15. And unfortunately the sugar scrub is not suitable for our diabetic customers, we do offer substitutions, please talk to your stylist. By getting the jump on your pet’s dental health, 2011 could be their healthiest year yet!

The Dental Down-Low
With so many pet dental products out there it’s hard to pick out what would be best for your pet. Greenies, Breathies, Yip-Yaps and oral gels galore, where do you even start?
The first step is to talk to your veterinarian about any concerns you may have about your pets’ teeth and mouth. Most owners complain that bad breath makes getting puppy kisses a little less pleasent, but dental health issues go far beyond bad breath.
Did you know that plaque can begin to develop in 24 hours? Plaque begins as a soft film that covers the surface of your pet’s teeth, when left alone it begins to mineralize and harden and becomes tartar. Tartar forms close to the gum line and builds up over time causing the gums to become inflamed and sensitive. As tartar continues to build in the mouth the bacteria associated with tartar travels into the blood stream and can begins to affect your pets’ organs. Heart disease and kidney failure are two of the most dangerous diseases stemming from poor oral health, but disease progression can be curtailed by adding a few steps to your pet’s daily routine!
By detecting signs of tooth trouble, bright red gums, visible tartar buildup and foul smelling breath, you and your veterinarian can set up a dental plan to help improve dental health. Most veterinarians agree that brushing your dog’s teeth daily can help reduce plaque build up, however most owners don’t have the time or willingness to follow what can be a tedious daily task. Designed to supplement brushing are specially designed toys and treats; most have bumps and ridges that help break down plaque and tartar just by chewing on them.
If treats and toys aren’t doing the job, or if your pet becomes bored of the same old toy, there are also special dental diets that you can follow. Large, fibrous pieces of food kibble are best at helping remove plaque; treats made of the same ingredients work well too. The biggest complaints about special dental diets are their cost; the food and treats that work best at maintaining a healthy mouth aren’t cheap.
Another downside is the anatomy and functionality of your dog’s mouth. The teeth most prone to tartar build up, are the ones that are used the least for chewing. The incisors and the front teeth are the greatest at risk; brushing is really the only preventative measure effective for these teeth. The best action plan is to combine daily brushing with specialty treats and toys designed to help eliminate plaque and tartar.
Last but not least, the best dental disease prevention tool is to set up a dental care plan with your vet. Regular check ups and cleanings have proven to be the most effective in reducing your pet’s risk of dental disease and gingivitis. Keep in mind our grooming salon offers teeth brushing along with Plaqclnz treatments. These services can be done ala-carte or in addition to any bathing or grooming service. Maintaining healthy a regular brushing schedule will aid in reducing tartar build up and make veterinary dental cheek ups more effective.
A clean and healthy mouth can lead to a happier and healthier life for your pet and fresher, better smelling breath leads to more enjoyable puppy kisses for you!

Client Spotlight: Georgie and Marley
Georgie and Marley, the always smiling, dog and cat duo have been staying with Paradise for almost 2 years now. Their mom knows the value of good dental health! Mom says, “the health of the mouth and teeth can reflect other conditions so it's extremely important to pay attention!†Dental health means more than white teeth and fresh breath; to Georgie and Marley, perfecting their pearly white smiles is part of their daily routine. When asked what the biggest part of their daily dental regimen is, mom excitedly exclaims “treats!â€. By giving Georgie and Marley daily goodies made to help eliminate plaque mom gets the early start on good dental hygiene. Mom also makes sure their teeth get an occasional at home brushing, “they both LOVE the toothpaste!†and an annual check up and cleaning at the vet.
When the boys stay at Paradise, we follow the same daily dental routine as mom, even giving them a few extra treats too. “Georgie adores Auntie Jenny [in the cattery] and Marley loves his nature walks and private play times. Life is definitely not hard for the boys when they are at ‘The ‘Lodge’â€.
It’s hard for us not to love these two dental conscious boys with fresh minty breath! It makes our job of receiving kisses much more enjoyable! |

Employee Spotlight: Katrina
| Katrina has been employed with Paradise for almost 14 years, and has been the grooming salon manager for 5 years. After receiving an advertisement for Plaqclnz over a year ago, Katrina dug in for research. Discovering all of the good things Plaqclnz had to offer got her excited and now she is on a pet dental health mission! Having several pets herself, she is always looking to improve her dog, Brutus’s, breath and Plaqclnz was the perfect system. When asked about how many customers she thought she had gotten to jump on the Plaqclnz bandwagon, she excitedly said, “probably over 100!†Her love of pets got her started in the salon, but it’s her creativity that shows through in her work; just ask Dino the cat who gets shaved into a head-to-tail Mohawk, or the dozens of poodles that get trimmed into their gorgeous show cuts. Our grooming salon just wouldn’t be complete without Katrina and her skilled team of stylists. |
