In the s-PAW-tlight: Paradise's New Addition!

Many of you have already met our new office dog, Lilly. Lilly came to us through Rescued Paws, a local pet rescue organization that rescues pets facing euthanasia from local shelters and places them in foster homes until they can be adopted by their forever family. You can check out their website at www.RescuedPaws.org.

Lilly is an 11 month old Lab and Anatolian Shepard mix. She is very laid back, but once you get her in play mode, she is ready! Lilly spends most of her day hanging out with the girls in the front office, going out to group play to mingle, and loves her afternoon naps on her fuzzy bed. At night she goes home with a PPL staff member or keeps watch over the other boarders.

Look for updates to be showcased in "Lilly's Lounge: A Day in the Life of an Office Dog", in future newsletter editions. You can also follow Lilly and her day-to-day adventures on Twitter and Facebook!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

PAMPERING AT PARADISE

During the month of August we will be doing complimentary facials for all of our dogs who receive bathing during their salon visit! The facial and paw treatment upgrade is usually available for $5, but for this month only, it will be included at no extra charge!

Our facials use a soothing shampoo made especially for the eyes and face, and with frequent and repeated use, can help to eliminate and reduce the amount of tear staining around the eyes.

This facial add-on seems to help your pet relax and melt into their bath, making it more rejuvenating and enjoyable.

Come on in and let your pet experience relaxation at its best!

Crazy Questions for the Curious

Silly and crazy pet related questions that will have you cracking a smile.

**As beneficial as the vitamin D in sun may be, can the UV rays affect my pet's skin?

-Yes, your pet can get sunburned. White cats are most at risk and the ears are usually the first spot to burn. Short coated and pale-skin dogs are also at risk. The bridge of the nose, the ears and the groin area are the most susceptible due to the sun reflecting off of the pavement, water or sand depending on location. As in humans, prolonged exposure can lead to skin cancer. Before a long day out-and-about, apply "people" sunscreen to vulnerable areas on your pet: ears, nose and tummy to help keep them from "feeling the burn"!

**I live in a fairly wooded area and my dog had a chance encounter with a skunk. How do I get rid of that awful smell?

-As you might have guessed, tomato juice does the same thing for your dog as it does for a human that has been sprayed by skunk stink. However, it is important to start with a shampoo bath before dousing your dog in tomato juice; this will help remove some of the sulfuric acid (the main component in the spray) before it has a chance to dry on your pet's skin. The spray is also oil based, so it may take more than one bath, or de-skunking treatment to completely rid your pet of the smell. Note that bathing your dog in tomato juice will probably turn their coat red, so if you are worried about that shining white coat, it might be better to try a product made especially for skunk stink removal.

**My dog and I went swimming at the lake, and now we are both itchy all over! Help!

-Chances are you, and your dog are both suffering from the common "swimmers itch", a dermatitis (or parasite) that can develop on your skin after swimming in a fresh water lake or marine coastal area. As crazy as the itching may make you, there really is no medical relief besides a good shower for you, a good scrub down for your dog in a skin soothing oatmeal bath, and some anti-itch cream or Benedryl for both of you. Please note that it is very important to contact your vet before giving over-the-counter medications, and that if symptoms continue, your pet might need to be seen to eliminate other skin conditions.

**I love to take hikes through the woods with my dog, but I noticed she likes to eat the berries along the way. Is this harmful to her?

-Most available research points to the answer of "no", but most researchers still warn that you might want to keep away from wild fruits when hiking, camping, etc., just because it can never be determined if the plants and fruit have been treated with any kind of pesticide or fertilizer, and these, more than the fruit itself, are what could put your pet in the most danger. So, besides a possible upset tummy, and some very colorful stool, there isn't a major threat posted with your pet eating wild berries; however it's always better to stay away, than to take a chance, especially when it comes to your pet's health.

How we Beat the Heat

Many of you have called and e-mailed in questions about how we handle the heat and make your pets comfortable during their stay when temperatures outside are reaching 100 degrees. Here are some things we do to help make your pet's stay more comfortable.

The kennel buildings and some of the kennels themselves are insulated with cinderblock, so it keeps the heat out, and there are fans inside every building that circulates the air inside. We are constantly hosing down the walkways, inside and out, the outside walls of the buildings and some of the kennel floors to keep things cool. Your pet has access to a cold bucket of water 24 hours a day, which are periodically refreshed with ice cubes to keep the water nice n' cold! We have also been gently misting the dogs, or toweling them off with a cold cloth to help bring body temperature down and keep them cool. All dog activities are done before noon each day. Many dogs get a chance to lounge in the shade or splash in the kiddie pool's that we have around the facility. Staff members are constantly checking on our boarders and making sure everyone is resting comfortably.

We are also offering Yoghund, a frozen yogurt treat for your pet and Ice Pup's, chicken flavored ice cubes for your dog to enjoy during their stay with us! You can purchase them at check in and we can give them to your dog as a cool and refreshing afternoon snack!

Hopefully the heat breaks soon, and we can get back to the more normal summer temperatures we are all used to.
